Hariharan began his professional singing career in 1977, quickly establishing himself as a ghazal maestro. He broke into the mainstream playback scene in the 1990s, recording massive hits with legendary composers like A.R. Rahman (such as "Tu Hi Re" from Bombay). He has successfully invented a new style known as "Ghazal Blues" and has composed over 30 albums.In 1998, Hariharan and musician Lesle Lewis formed the pop band Colonial Cousins, which became a massive sensation in India and globally. Beyond contemporary and film music, Hariharan’s devotional recordings are immensely popular; his rendition of the Hanuman Chalisa recorded for T-Series surpassed 3 billion views, making it the first devotional song globally to reach the milestone.
