Mammootty, born Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail on September 7, 1951, is a prominent Indian actor and film producer, primarily known for his work in Malayalam cinema. With a career spanning over five decades, he has established himself as one of the most celebrated figures in Indian film history, appearing in more than 400 films across various languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and English.
Mammootty was born in Chandiroor, Kerala, into a middle-class Muslim family. He completed his schooling in Kottayam and later pursued a degree in law from Government Law College, Ernakulam. Before fully committing to acting, he practiced law for two years in Manjeri. His entry into the film industry began with a minor role in the 1971 film Anubhavangal Paalichakal, but it was not until 1981 that he gained recognition as a lead actor with the film Thrishna.
Mammootty’s career took off in the early 1980s, marked by significant performances in films like Ahimsa (1981) and Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu (1983), which solidified his status as a leading actor. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he became known for his versatility, portraying a wide range of characters from heroic figures to complex antiheroes. His performance in the 1987 film New Delhi marked a turning point, reviving his career after a series of setbacks.
In the 2000s, Mammootty continued to achieve critical and commercial success, winning multiple awards, including three National Film Awards for Best Actor. Notable films from this period include Kaazcha (2004), Paleri Manikyam (2009), and Pranchiyettan & the Saint (2010). His recent works, such as Bheeshma Parvam (2022) and Kannur Squad (2023), have further demonstrated his enduring appeal and ability to adapt to changing cinematic trends.
